Glycolic acid is a fruit acid that has been used in skin care products for decades. Glycolic acid offers an effective solution to various skin problems such as dullness, uneven skin texture and tone, dehydration, imperfections and the signs of aging. Glycolic acid stimulates cell renewal and thus improves the clarity and uniformity of the complexion and the homogeneity of the skin texture. Glycolic Acid is present in many skin care products (lotion, serum, cream), its exfoliating power allows it to stimulate cell renewal and thus improve your complexion!

What is glycolic acid?

Of natural or synthetic origin, glycolic acid, formerly known as hydroxyacetic acid, is the shortest of the alpha-hydroxy acids (A.H.A.). It is also known as fruit acid, along with citric acid, malic acid, and lactic acid. This molecule is generally derived from sugar cane, grapes or beet. It is distinguished among the HAs by its powerful keratolytic activity and its small size, which allows it to penetrate the skin deeply. It is considered the active reference ingredient when you want to boost the radiance of the complexion, treat acne, hyperpigmentation, and even wrinkles, or moisturize the skin.

Glycolic acid is used in the formulation of a large number of skincare products: toners, serums or creams. Its concentration in cosmetic products, varying between 4 and 20%, depends on the needs identified. Above 20%, the concentration of glycolic acid makes it possible to carry out a peel. As a result, its use is strictly supervised by a professional and falls into the category of dermatological or aesthetic treatments. In addition to the concentration, the pH of the formula will influence the intensity of the exfoliation. The higher the pH, the more the glycolic acid's action is neutralized.

What are the properties of glycolic acid on the skin?

The exfoliating effect of glycolic acid improves the texture and appearance of the skin by removing dead cells and breaking down the intercellular cement that binds them together. Its ability to stimulate skin cell renewal allows it to correct UV-damaged skin (dark spots), dull skin and erase blemish marks. By penetrating deep into the skin thanks to its small size, it regulates the action of melanocytes during the production of melanin and reduces the appearance of pigmentation spots. Glycolic acid also acts in the dermis to stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin, which helps the skin to regain its firmness and tone. The prevention of oxidation, sebum regulation in the case of oily skin and the mattifying effect are also virtues of glycolic acid.

Contraindications for the use of glycolic acid

Although glycolic acid is compatible with all skin types, it is an irritating ingredient for the skin. When misused or in excessive doses, it can cause skin reactions such as redness, itching or allergies that manifest themselves on the skin. When using a glycolic acid-based skincare product, it is quite normal to feel a little tingling. However, if the tingling becomes a severe burning sensation, the application area should be rinsed quickly with water. Glycolic acid is also a photosensitizing active ingredient that reacts to exposure to UV radiation. Therefore, it is advisable to apply it in the evening and put on a sun cream during the day, while the product is being used.
